Healthy indoor air is important for health and well-being. A Philips air purifier can help you achieve this.  The devices create healthy indoor air, but it is necessary to change the filters regularly.  There are numerous influencing factors that affect the life of the filters. These include, for example, the load of the room air with particles, pollen and odors, but also the duration of use and the retrieved air performance of the device. A timely filter change ensures perfect room air without pollutants, viruses or aerosols.

The life of a filter depends on the type and duration of use, as well as the air quality in the home. Replacing the filters in a timely manner will keep the air in your home environment in excellent condition.

What are the Philips filter types?

Philips Vorfilter fuer unsere Luftreiniger

Philips sells its air purifiers with two different basic filter designs: either cartridge filters or rectangular flat filters. In addition, some models come with humidifying filters. The room air cleaners are usually equipped with HEPA and activated carbon. Following we go into the different filter configurations of Philips air purifiers.

The pre-filter

Philips air filters usually rely on nylon pre-filters, which trap coarse dust and dirt. These filters protect the materials of the subsequent filters. In Philips room air cleaners with flat filters (e.g. AC 2889-10 AC 2887-10), these are usually individually removable and washable. In the devices with cartridge filters, the pre-filters are replaced with the cartridge and cannot be cleaned (e.g. AC0820 10 or AC4236 10).

Philips air purifier with separate activated carbon and HEPA filter and cartridge filter

Philips mainly uses so-called HEPA and activated carbon filters in its air purifiers. The HEPA filter filters particles, dust, viruses and bacteria and aerosols, whereas the activated carbon filter is used more against odors and chemical substances.

The Philips Series 800 includes HEPA cartridge filters that either have an integrated activated carbon filter, such as AC0830/10, or not, such as the AC0820 10 model with the Philips 800 Series Nano Protect HEPA cartridge filter. If you have purchased a model AC0820 10, you can also easily equip it with a Philips replacement filter for the AC0830/10 (Philips replacement filter model number FY0293/30) and thus add the function activated carbon to your air purifier.

Just as in the 800 series, Philips still uses cartridge filters in the Series 4000i with model AC4236/10 and the Series 3000i with model AC3036. However, unlike the 800 series, these filters are so far always equipped with an activated carbon component.

In contrast, Philips Series 1000 air purifiers with models AC1214 10, AC1214 rely on flat filters with a HEPA filter and a separate activated carbon filter.

Same with the Philips Series 2000i with the models AC2889 10, AC2887 10 or AC2729 10 / AC2729. These include flat filters with separate HEPA filters and activated carbon filters, which can be ordered individually or as a package.

Philips air washer and room air purifier with combination filter

The model AC4080 and also some older air purifiers such as AC4072/11 consist of a combination HEPA and activated carbon filter.

Either folded - as in the AC4147/10 model for the AC4172/11 air purifier - or separate as in the AC4080 model.

Some Philips air purifiers, such as the model AC4080, HU5930 10 or AC 3829/10, have an additional humidification function that also still requires humidifying filters. These devices thus have two or three filter units, depending on whether the HEPA- activated carbon module is built together or separately.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of combination filters compared to separate flat filters?

Separate activated carbon and HEPA filters help with odor pollution, i.e., cigarette smoke, cooking odors, or evaporation from furniture. However, the activated carbon part has a shorter life than the HEPA filter in these cases. For problems with particles such as fine dust or pollen, it makes sense to use a combination filter because then the service life of both filter components is similar and there are cost advantages when replacing the filters.

When to replace the filter in Philips air purifiers?

Generally, almost all Philips air purifiers have a filter change indicator that signals when a filter needs to be replaced. Comedes recommends a filter replacement when the filter change indicator signals this or at the latest after nine months. For allergy sufferers who have problems with pollen, it is recommended to change the filter once a season.

For carbon filters, an earlier change may be advisable if odor problems are the main reason for use.

HEPA filters should also be replaced in any case, regardless of the filter change indicator, if a large dust cake has formed.

Why should the filter of a Philips air purifier be changed even though the filter change is not yet indicated?

The filters in the devices filter pollutants from the air, these collect in the filter and form a dust cake with increasing quantity. Bacteria and viruses usually die quickly in the filter because they are dehydrated by the running draught. If larger dust particles obstruct the airflow, after some time so-called blind spots can form in the filter, which are no longer properly flowed through. This must be avoided at all costs.  If the units are in continuous operation, it is unlikely that such a thing will happen because the filter change indicator will preempt such problems.  However, especially with seasonally used units, the filter change indicator may not be 100% reliable on this point, so we recommend changing it after nine months at the latest.

How do I find the right replacement filter for my Philips air purifier?

The company Comedes offers the appropriate replacement filters for many Philips room air purifiers. The easiest way is to enter the type designation of your air purifier above in the search, then you will find the filter that fits your device. Alternatively, you can enter the part number or type designation of the filter above. You can also find some frequently sold replacement filters by clicking on the category below.
For the activated carbon part, Philips uses so-called Nano Protect S3 AC filters in the aforementioned devices. For these Philips room air filters suitable activated carbon filters, you can order here!
