Dehumidifier against mold

In many homes, residents struggle with mold growth. This can have very different causes. But apart from the fact that the mold is not exactly visually appealing, it can also cause damage to health in the long run. One of the first measures in the case of mold infestation is therefore often a dehumidifier.

Against mold

When to use a dehumidifier against mold?

Mold growth is caused by damp walls. This moisture in the walls is in turn released into the surrounding air. This is where the dehumidifier comes into play: itremoves the moisture from the air so that the walls can gradually dry out. A dry wall does not provide a breeding ground for mold, so the spread of mold is stopped.

The advantages of a dehumidifier against mold

Anyone who discovers mold in their home should act quickly. Especially when it comes to rooms where people spend a long time and often, such as the living room or bedroom. The great advantage of a dehumidifier is that it can be put into operation immediately. It does not require extensive setup and intensive maintenance. Whether it is a chemical or electrically operated dehumidifier, the water tank must be emptied at certain intervals and (in the case of the chemical version) the granules must be refilled. Apart from that, it immediately begins its work and removes moisture from the air in the room.

Mold growth in summer

In summer, basements and cool rooms are particularly affected. The reason for this is that the warm, moist outside air cools down when it flows inside. Consequently, it can no longer hold as much moisture and condenses on the cooler walls. This moisture is now absorbed by the masonry. Initially, mildew stains appear behind cabinets and in corners. Later, extensive mold can also occur if nothing is done about the damp walls.

Mold growth in winter

In winter, on the other hand, irregular ventilation is often decisive for rooms that are too damp. With closed windows, no air exchange takes place, which is why the air is saturated after a certain time and can not absorb further moisture. The excess water then condenses on cold walls or windows and soaks organic materials such as plaster, wallpaper or wood. This creates an optimal breeding ground for mold and other germs.

How to ventilate properly when using a dehumidifier?

If the dehumidifier is in operation, the basic rule is called shock ventilation. In cold winter months, proper ventilation can also dehumidify the walls.

When mold forms in your own home, many people ask themselves the question: is a dehumidifier enough or do you have to ventilate additionally? The simple answer to the question: both are equally important! Proper ventilation allows the moist air in the room to escape outside, and in return, dry outside air enters the room. However, in the case of damp walls, airing alone is often not enough. Therefore, a dehumidifier should be used as a support in any case. Especially in winter, it is not always possible to keep the windows open often and for long periods. A dehumidifier ensures here that the heat is retained and moisture is nevertheless removed from the air.

How do electric dehumidifiers work?

In addition to chemical dehumidifiers, which use granules to extract moisture from the ambient air, Comedes relies on electric dehumidifiers based on the heat pump principle. Between granular and electric dehumidifier there are significant differences in performance. The working capacity of the electric version is several times higher than the "analog" method. The latter reaches its limits in the case of moisture from walls, since already one cubic meter of brick can hold up to 180 liters of water - a granular dehumidifier can not economically manage this amount. Inside the electric device there is a so-called evaporator, which is cooled. Due to the low temperature, the moisture fogs up on the cooling fins and runs into a collection container or directly down the drain. To prevent the environment from cooling down, the air is then reheated and directed into the room.

The best place for the dehumidifier for mold

A device for dehumidification must do quite a lot. All the air in a room must flow through the device, if possible, to be properly dehumidified. And this process must be carried out continuously, because, as a rule, damp walls are the cause of mold - and they permanently release their moisture into the surrounding air. A good location is therefore as central as possible in the room, so that the air from all areas of the room can be evenly "processed". Likewise, there should be no obstacles or other objects directly in front of, next to or above the dehumidifier. Because otherwise the unobstructed air supply is not guaranteed and the device does not fulfill the desired effect.

What selection criteria should I consider when choosing a dehumidifier?

When choosing the right dehumidifier, some criteria should be considered. First and foremost, it should be designed for the required space - if the dehumidifier is too small for the room, the air will not be sufficiently dried even in continuous operation. For this, a correspondingly high dehumidification capacity is necessary. In particular, electrical devices for dehumidification should bring an integrated fan that sucks in the moist air and transports it out of the device dry again. A sufficiently large water tank should also be available; alternatively, there should be a hose with which the condensation water can be drained. Likewise, the devices should have an integrated heating element, which heats the air appropriately when the ambient temperature is cold. If there is no construction defect and the mold originates mainly from condensation moisture, we recommend the following room sizes and dehumidification capacities for use against mold mold control Living rooms with a room temperature of 20°C

What to do in case of mold infestation?

In case of mold infestation in the apartment, house or cellar, some important steps should be taken. These include both proper ventilation and dehumidifying the air in the room. Especially in the cold season, regular ventilation is associated with considerable heat loss, which is why a dehumidifier comes in handy. Devices are available in different designs, both chemical and electrical. The ideal place for a dehumidifier is as central as possible in the room, so that the air is drawn in evenly from all corners of the room. Likewise, interfering objects and other obstacles should not stand in front of the device for dehumidification. In addition to the dehumidification performance, factors such as fan, heating element and water tank or hose are also important selection criteria for the appropriate dehumidifier. Apart from that, however, the removal of existing mold is also urgently necessary, as well as the research and elimination of the cause of the high humidity in the wall.

Use of air purifiers for mold infestation

If walls in living spaces are infested with visible mold, mold spores are constantly released into the air in the room, these are problematic, on the one hand they can be toxic, on the other hand they ensure that the mold can quickly spread to other places in the apartment. The mold spores can be effectively filtered with air purifiers. For this purpose, we recommend using the Comedes Lavaero 280 in rooms up to 30m² and the Lavaero 900 in larger rooms.
